Lake Charles Louisiana. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division is investigating a tragic boating accident that claimed the life of Danny Harrison, 71, of Lake Charles.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred on June 8 in Jefferson Davis Parish. Harrison was ejected from his vessel after it struck an object in the water. Following the ejection, the unmanned boat continued to operate, ultimately striking Harrison with the propeller, resulting in fatal injuries.
Authorities confirmed that Harrison was wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) at the time of the accident. However, preliminary findings indicate he was not wearing a kill switch lanyard—a safety device that immediately shuts off the motor when the operator is thrown from the vessel. This device is required by Louisiana law for boats under 26 feet in length equipped with hand-tiller motors exceeding 10 horsepower.
The LDWF is continuing its investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. In the meantime, the agency is once again urging all boaters to follow safety regulations, including the use of engine cut-off (kill switch) lanyards, to prevent similar tragedies.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Danny Harrison during this incredibly difficult time,” LDWF officials stated.
Boaters are reminded that even experienced operators are at risk on the water, and taking all safety precautions—such as wearing life jackets and utilizing all required equipment—can be life-saving.
Further information will be released as the investigation progresses.
